It’s time for Chilean wine. I was wondering which one I should start with, didn’t want to reach for the top shelf but, on the other hand, didn’t want the lowest shelf either for the beginning. I’ve chosen quite a pleasant wine from one of my favourite Chilean wine makers – Concha y Toro. This producer is known in Poland for famous Casillero del Diablo, which one can buy literally everywhere, from gas station to Biedronka (Polish discount shop). Marques de Casa Concha is a slightly better wine than Casillero, each consecutive vintage usually gets between 90 and 92 points. In recent Wine Spectator magazine’s Top 100 ranking Marques Syrah 2010 was appreciated- it ended up on position 62 with 91 points. Carmenere 2010 was rather not as successful as 2009 (which was recognized in 2011 as the best Chilean Carmenere), even producer’s website does not mention that vintage in their wine ranking. The wine is worth trying though.

This wine is made of grapes from Peumo Vineyard, in Rapel Valley. Owing to clay loam and Mediterranean climate the wine is quite decent.  It is aging 18 months in French oak barrels before it is poured into bottles.

One can tell by the bottle that an interesting wine on a decent level should be anticipated. So it’s time for tasting. Marques has a beautiful deep red colour. It is quite dense and leaves pleasant tears on the glass. Delicate fruity bouquet. Black currant flavour can be sensed, but we need to let the wine breathe first, only after some time fruits became more distinct. The wine is not too heavy, rather well balanced, smooth. It has an interesting, quite long finish. In one word – pleasant.

To sum up, Marques de Casa Concha is quite an interesting mid-range wine, definitely recommendable. You can find it online for about PLN 70 (17€). It is definitely worth searching for Carmenere 2009, Syrah 201o, also Cabarnet Sauvignon Edicion Especial, which was awarded 96 points and best Chilean Cabarnet title, was great.
