When I was in Warsaw not so long ago, I decided to visit a shop owned by quite famous man, who has sacrificed acting in order to pursue his passion for wine. By the way, I’m not surprised by his decision at all, but that’s a subject for another entry. I bought a few wines in that shop. I asked the amiable salesman to recommend some heavier, intense and rather fruity wines. I bought mainly wines from Chile and Spain but I started my test purchase from South African wine. As I’ve already mentioned, this is the region poorly discovered by me, but I’m open to get to know it, so I got convinced to take Fairview Shiraz 2011. Decent price range, wine for PLN 57 (about 13 Euros) might present something interesting.

Fairview is made of grapes from two different regions of South African Republic. One of them is granite soils at the foothills in Paarl, another one is dry soils of Swartland. The wine is aged 2 years in French and American oak barrels. During production, best Rhone yeasts are used, in order to come close to French wines quality. The wine has an interesting colour, however, one can see immediately, that it doesn’t have much to offer. But it’s not that bad. Flavour is pleasant, delicate, slightly fruity.

In its taste… there’s something missing. Something distinct. According to description, vanilla, cinnamon and pepper should be sensed, furthermore anise with plum jam. Well, good luck worth searching for those flavours, if anybody finds them all, please let me know. I could find pepper maybe, there is a little bit of a spicy taste. For sure, it is pleasantly smooth and the taste remains in one’s mouth long after swallowing. But I think it poses as a French wine too much. Because it is like that, so French.

For a medium-lower shelf this wine is… decent. It’s not a show-stopper but for sure it doesn’t disappoint. Since I have just discovered other, cheaper and better wine, I think Fairview is worth buying from time to time only.
